BARN CONVERSION
HAWKSWORTH, WEST YORKSHIRE
The Hawksworth Barn Renovation is a considered conversion that respects the building’s historic character while introducing the functionality required for modern living. The original barn structure has been retained externally, allowing the building to sit naturally within its rural West Yorkshire setting.
Internally, the layout has been configured to create an open-plan living space. The design encourages flow, visibility, and flexibility, making the space more suitable for contemporary use without compromising its character. The renovation makes use of natural building materials that reflect the structure’s original fabric. Stone and timber have been included in the internal design to create a clear connection between the existing building and its current use.
The design approach also ensures that the building maintains a strong connection to its surroundings. Finishes, materials, and views are all considered to reflect the rural landscape, allowing the renovated barn to remain grounded in its context while serving the needs of modern life.

One of the standout features of this project is the long, naturally lit cathedral corridor that serves as the spine of the renovation. Designed to maximize natural light, the corridor utilizes expansive skylights, creating a bright and airy atmosphere throughout the day. This corridor not only enhances the overall appeal of the space but also promotes energy efficiency by reducing the need for artificial lighting and contributing to the buildings natural ventilation strategy.

Another feature is the incorporation of modern amenities such as a underfloor heating and mechanical ventilation to help regulate the internal climate. The barn conversion includes contemporary kitchen and bathroom fixtures and integrated smart home technology, ensuring that the space meets current standards of comfort and convenience. These touches are subtly integrated into the design, maintaining the barn's historical appearance while providing all the benefits of every day living.
